Fostering Saves Lives

That’s the bottom line. Fosters give animals that might not have a chance in a stressful shelter environment or who need a safe and loving place to grow up in the opportunity to flourish and find families.

It is hard to find a more rewarding “job” than bringing a shelter or rescue animal into your home. You give them love and watch them grow and become comfortable and happy enough to show off their true personalities. Then you get to see them join families that have fallen in love with them, knowing that the animals might never have been noticed or received the opportunity to brighten a family’s life without your gift of love and care.

One of the most important volunteer positions at Heading Home is that of foster parent; without having wonderful homes for the animals we care for to socialize, learn, and grow in, we simply could not do the life-saving work that we do.

After telling someone that I foster shelter and rescue animals, one of the most common responses I hear is, “I don’t know how you do it…I could never part with them.” My response: “I promise you, the rewarding and joyful feeling that you get when your fosters find their forever homes – knowing where they started and knowing that they might not have had a chance without you – far overshadows any sadness on your part.” Do I miss them after they leave? Yes. Is the feeling enough to not open up my heart and home to give them a chance to find their happy ending/beginning? Not even close.
